Caroline Burgess is a keen runner and loyal Best For Ages supporter. She is also never afraid to take on a challenge and raise essential funds to enhance the lives of those living with dementia.
On Sunday 16 September 2018, Caroline will be running the Great East Run in memory of her mum, Mrs Mary Seager. Mary was a resident at MHA's Norwood care home in Ipswich for five years.
Caroline says: "This run means so much, as a memorial run for my dear Mum. I want to do well in her memory. Funds raised on her behalf will go as a small way of a thank you to Norwood, for their care and the respect that they showed to my mum during her time there, and especially during her last few days with them."
Having raced in numerous full and half marathons in previous years, Caroline set herself the goal of taking part in a charity running event every six months on behalf of MHA – most notably the Great North Run and London Marathon.
Speaking about her continuous support, Caroline said: “MHA has been my charity of choice ever since my mother was admitted to their Norwood care home in Ipswich following her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. Since then, I have raised thousands of pounds in sponsorship and have had the pleasure to see directly how the money has been spent to improve the wellbeing of the home’s residents.
“They have been able to invest in things like a new TV area, where the residents can reminisce and watch their favourite shows, sensory books and craft supplies. The home has used the money to provide one-to-one and group music therapy sessions for those living with advanced dementia too, giving them the opportunity to express their emotions and feelings.
“Taking part in challenge events for MHA is very rewarding and I would recommend others to get involved. The MHA fundraising team have always been supportive in handling online donations and promoting my events. It’s heartening to see the real difference every donation and sponsorship makes to the quality of lives of older people – not just at Norwood care home but right across the UK. I look forward to sporting my MHA running shirt again in the very near future.”
